The air brake controller is on the right side of the console. The automatic air brake handle operates to six positions.

They are:

Release.

Minimum reduction.

Suppression.

Full service.

Handle off.

and Emergency.

The service zone is between the minimum reduction and full service positions.

Release position is selected when charging a train or releasing automatic air brake applications.

the handle position "Release" is the closest position to the engineer.

the minimum reduction position provides 5 to 7 PSI reduction of air brake pipe pressure.

Moving the automatic brake handle away from engineer into the service zone increases the reduction.

Suppression position provides 15 to 19 PSI reduction of air brake pipe pressure.

Moving the handle farther to the third service zone position caused a full service reduction provides a 23 to 26 PSI reduction of air brake pipe pressure.

Handle-off position used for trail unit operation, push service operation and when unit is dead in-tow.

Moving the handle to Emergency position the farthest position from engineer initiates emergency brake application.

The independent brake handle controls the application of brakes on locomotive only.

To apply the independent brake move the handle away from the engineer.

To release the independent brake move the handle toward the engineer.

The independent brake handle should always be in Release positions when unit is in:

Trail operation.

When it is Dead in-tow.

Or when it is operating in Push service.

To make an independent release at automatic brake application hold up the ring on independent brake handle.

You must hold ring up for 4 seconds per locomotive in consist to fully bail-off brakes in all units.

The brake pipe cut-off switch is located below the independent brake handle.

The switch has four positions. They are:

Trail position. For operating in trail position, in Multiple-Unit consist, in push service, or dead in tow.

Test position. Test position is selected when perform brake pipe leakage test, the pressure maintaining feature is nullified when the switch in test position.

Freight/ passenger position. Turning the switch into Freight or passenger position restores controls of automatic brake.

The Freight or passenger position is used when unit is on lead operation.

Freight position. Freight position provides a direct release of the brakes.

Passengers position. Passengers position provides a graduated release of brakes.
